Week In Review: Mr. Market Gets Weaker

11 SPX- Sitting on 50 DMA LineMr. Market Breaks Support and Gets Weaker

The bears emerged victorious after another ugly week on Wall Street. A closer look beneath the surface showed a lot of damage occurred. In last week’s report, we mentioned that the tape was split and we were seeing a few important areas begin to roll over. Well, many of those important areas broke down leaving fewer and fewer areas in “good” technical shape. The areas that concern us are (in no particular order) : Retail ($XRT), Semiconductors ($SMH), Apple Inc ($AAPL), Netflix ($NFLX), Tesla ($TSLA), Biotechs ($IBB), Transports ($IYT), Restaurants, Housing ($XHB), and Steel ($SLX). The sore thumb (big standout) over the last few days, was more carnage in the retail space and the fact that the big financials and indices broke support (50 DMA line). A slew of retail stocks, which were already under pressure, got mauled last week after several big retailers ($M, $JWN, $DDS, and $KSS, just to mention a few) tanked after reporting lousy numbers. Next week, we will see a few more big retailers report earnings such as: Home Depot ($HD), Wal-mart ($WMT), Target ($TGT), TJX Companies $TJX, and Lowe’s, ($LOW). We expect more fun for the bears. On Friday, the government told us Retail Sales jumped 1.3% but the data from the real world suggests something completely different (and, remember, gov’t statistics are prone to massive “revisions.”) It is also important to note that several important areas broke below their respective 50 day moving average lines last week. A few important areas that broke below support are: The Dow Jones Industrial Average, The S&P 500. A slew of big banks (GS, C, WFC, BAC, etc), Steel stocks (SLX), Industrials ($XLI), and oil service stocks ($OIH). Meanwhile, the healthy areas of the market are dwindling and include defensive (late cycle) stocks: Defense stocks ($LMT, $NOC, $RTN), Food, Beverage, Utilities ($XLU), Gold/Silver, and some energy stocks. Clearly, the tape is very split with the bears getting stronger. At this point, barring more massive easy money from global central banks- the action suggests were repeating what happened in Nov-Dec and are about to roll over again. We do want to mention a lot of these areas are extended and a little counter trend bounce could easily ensue. Intermediate and long term, the market remains very toppy and we still think it is a matter of time until we enter another sizeable bear market. Clearly, caution is king.
Monday-Wednesday’s Action:
Stocks ended mixed on Monday after a slew of commodity stocks fell hard as biotech and a few big cap tech stocks rallied. Elsewhere, gold and silver fell hard as the hot money moved out of commodities and into beaten down areas of the market like biotechs. China’s stocks fell after the country reported a -10.9% decline in imports and a -1.8% decline in exports from the same period last year. The weaker than expected trade data bodes poorly for the global economy.
Stocks rallied on Tuesday after the bulls showed up and defended the 50 DMA line for many important areas of the market including the benchmark S&P 500. Overnight, stocks rallied after Japan said it will intervene in the currency market if “one-sided” yen continues to rally. Japan’s Finance Minister Taro Aso told Reuters that Japan is ready to take action if the Yen’s rally hurts their economy. The Yen has soared this year and is perceived as a risk-off trade.
Stocks fell hard on Wednesday, erasing most of Tuesday’s gains after the latest round of tepid earnings data was released. Stocks fell hard after shares of: Disney ($D), Macys ($M), Fossil ($FOSL) and Wendys ($WEN) gapped down after reporting lousy earnings. The weak action dragged a slew of retail and restaurant stocks even lower which put pressure on the broader indices.
Thursday & Friday’s Action:
Thursday was another volatile day on Wall Street as the bulls showed up and defended the 50 DMA line for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the benchmark S&P 500. The action beneath the surface remains sloppy at best. Shortly after the open, we saw several important areas of the market break below support before the bulls showed up and did their best to save the day. Shares of: Apple $AAPL, Netflix $NFLX, The Philly Semiconductor index $SMH, and Tesla $TSLA were some big names that broke below key levels of support before the bulls showed up. Before Friday’s open, the government said Retail Sales rose by 1.3%, which was the highest jump since March 2015. Meanwhile, in the real-world, retail stocks are getting mauled. We’ll let you decide which camp you believe (government stats or the real world). The Dow and S&P 500 broke below their respective 50 DMA lines.
Market Outlook: Bears Are Getting Stronger
The market is getting weaker. It looks like what we saw in November and December before the big sell off in January-February. Economic and earnings data remains less than stellar but all that matters now- is the easy money from global central banks. As always, keep your losses small and never argue with the tape.

    Market Outlook- In A Correction:
The major U.S. averages are back in a “correction” as they continue to flirt and in some cases hit fresh 2011 lows. Allow us to be clear: If all the major averages break below their 2011 lows, then we will likely see another leg down. Please, trade accordingly! Several high ranked leaders violated their respective 50 DMA lines in late September which bodes poorly for the bulls and suggests the bears are getting stronger. The latest follow-through day (FTD) which began on August 23, 2011 has officially ended which means we will begin “counting” days before a new rally can be confirmed. In addition, it is important to note that the bears remain in control of this market until the major averages trade above their longer and shorter term moving averages (50 & 200 DMA lines). • Robust Rally Continues!

Monday-Wednesday’s Action: Stocks Successfully Test Support!
Over the weekend, EU leaders kicked the can down the road and reschedule yet another meeting on Wednesday to tackle their onerous debt levels. Elsewhere, shares of Catepillar Inc. (CAT) gapped up after topping Q3 estimates and raised their 2012 forecasts. The news on the M&A front was healthy- shares of RightNow Technologies (RNOW) and Healthspring Inc. (HS) gapped up after agreeing to be acquired on Monday.
Stocks fell on Tuesday and turned negative for the week as investors digested the latest round of lackluster earnings and EU leaders kicked the can down the road. Since 2008, we have been telling clients that is impossible to solve a debt crisis with more debt! However, the cognoscenti feel otherwise and as always we shall let the markets guide us.The news from the economic front was less than stellar. Consumer confidence in the U.S. unexpectedly fell in October to the lowest level since March 2009, during the “Great Recession.” Separately, the S&P Case/Shiller index of home prices in 20 major U.S. cities fell and missed estimates in August which reiterates how weak the housing market is right now.
Stocks bounced off support (SPX 1230) on Wednesday after Germany passed a plan to expand the EU bailout measure. In the U.S., durable goods topped estimates which bodes well for the economic recovery. Durable goods rose +1.7% in September which was the largest increase in six months and topped the +0.4% estimate. In other news, mortgage applications rose last week and recovered some of the losses from the previous week as demand for purchases and refinancing rose.
Thursday & Friday’s Action: Risk Assets Surge on EU Deal!
Stocks soared on Thursday after private lenders agreed to a 50% haircut on their Greek debt and EU leaders agreed to leverage the hell out of their EU bailout plan. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the EFSF (European bailout fund) will be leveraged 4-to-5 times in an attempt to curb their excessive debt woes. Sarkozy also spoke with Chinese leader Hu Jintao who offered to help Europe from imploding. Economic data in the U.S. was positive, the Labor Department said weekly jobless claims came in at 402,000 which barely beat expectations. More importantly, GDP jumped +2.5% last quarter which matched estimates and bodes well for the economic recovery. Stocks were relatively quiet on Friday after consumer spending rose but incomes remained lackluster.
    Market Outlook- Confirmed Rally:
The major U.S. averages are back in a new confirmed rally and broke above the mid-point/resistance of their 6-week bullish double bottom base. The benchmark S&P 500 index scored a proper FTD on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, i.e. Day 12, when it rallied over 2% on heavier volume than the prior session. In addition, it is important to note that the bulls scored a victory since many of the major averages closed above their downward sloping 50 DMA lines for the first time since late July! • Stocks Digest Friday's Large Move

The action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) has been strong. Looking forward, the window is open for disciplined investors to carefully buy high-ranked stocks, while many pundits are expecting that markets may consolidate following recent gains. It was encouraging to see the bulls show up and defend support (formerly resistance) last week. The next level of support for the major averages is their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines while the next level of resistance is their respective April highs. Trade accordingly.

  • Markets Perched Below Resistance

    Market Outlook- Rally Under Pressure:
The major averages confirmed their latest rally attempt on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 which was the 11th day of their latest rally attempt. It is important to note that all major rallies in history began with a FTD however not every FTD leads to a new rally (i.e. several FTDs fail). In addition, it is important to note that the major averages still are under pressure as they are all trading below their longer and shorter term moving averages (50 and 200 DMA lines) and are all still negative year-to-date. Our longstanding clients/readers know, we like to filter out the noise and focus on what matters most: market action. This rally will fail if/when several distribution days emerge or August’s lows are breached. Until then, the bulls deserve the benefit of the doubt.
