Stocks End Mixed On Healthy Economic Data

Tuesday, March 30, 2010
Market commentary:

The major averages traded between positive and negative territory after consumer confidence and home prices topped estimates. Volume totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange were reported mixed; higher on the Nasdaq and lower on the NYSE while advancers led decliners by about a 10-to-9 ratio on the NYSE and by about a 15-to-13 ratio on the Nasdaq exchanges. There were 44 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, higher than the 31 issues that appeared on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new lows on both exchanges yet again.

Housing & Consumer Confidence Top Estimates:

Housing stocks sold off after the S&P/Case-Shiller index of home prices was released. The 20-city home-price index unexpectedly rose +0.3% in January. The closely watched index tracks monthly changes of home prices in 20 metropolitan regions across the country and is used as a proxy for the underlying health of the residential real estate market. Elsewhere, the Conference Board released its consumer sentiment index which rose to +52.5 in March, up from +46.4 in February.

Overseas Economic Data Hurts Stocks:

Overseas, Standard & Poor’s cut Iceland’s currency’s credit rating as the small nation continues to make its way out of the worst economic crisis in several generations. In Europe, it was a bit disconcerting to see Greece only sell half the 12-year bonds needed to raise additional funds.

Market Action- Confirmed Rally:

The fact that there have only been three distribution days since the follow-though-day (FTD) bodes well for this nascent rally. It is also a welcome sign to see the market continue to improve as investors digest the latest round of stronger than expected economic and earnings data. Remember that now that a new rally has been confirmed, the window is open to proactively be buying high quality breakouts meeting the investment system guidelines. Trade accordingly.

Nuclear Tensions Send Stocks Lower – From Overbought Conditions The market fell from extremely overbought levels last week as tensions rose between the U.S. and North Korea. • Stocks Soar On EU Bailout

The technical action in global equity markets is not promising. At this point, several European stock market’s have fallen over -20% from their 52-week highs which technically defines a bear market. The major US averages are all trading below their respective 50 DMA lines which is not healthy. It was also disconcerting to see volume dry up on Monday as the major averages “bounced” from egregiously oversold levels, which usually suggests massive short covering, not new buying efforts. A host of leading stocks closed near their lows after a very strong open which is a subtle, yet important, sign of distribution. However, if this market resolves itself and wants to go higher, we will need to see a proper follow-through day (FTD) emerge before a new rally can be confirmed. Monday marked Day 1 of a new rally attempt which means that as long as Monday’s lows are not breached the earliest a possible FTD could emerge will be Thursday (Day 4). In addition, if Monday’s lows are breached then the day count will be reset. Taking the appropriate action on a case-by-case basis with your stocks prompts investors to raise cash when any holdings start getting into trouble. Trade accordingly.

  • Late Dollar Decline Lifts Stocks

Around 2pm EST the greenback started to fall and U.S. stocks started to rally. Apple Inc. (AAPL) vaulted +$7.66, or +4.18%, and closed above its 50 DMA line on above average volume. Apple has been a strong leader since the March lows and the fact that it quickly repaired the damage is a bullish sign for this rally. A new crop of high ranked stocks are currently working on new bases (Read:10 Stocks on My Watchlist 12.09.09) as the major averages continue consolidating their recent gains above their respective 50 DMA lines. It was encouraging to see the benchmark S&P 500 bounce off support (shown above) for the fourth time in the past few weeks. To be clear, the bulls deserve the bullish benefit of the doubt until the major averages close below their respective 50 DMA lines. At this point, they are acting well and appear to want to move higher.
