Healthy Week On Wall St; Stocks Close Above Resistance!

Friday, July 23, 2010
Stock Market Commentary:

Stocks ended higher this week as investors digested a slew of earnings and economic data. Volume, an important indicator of institutional sponsorship, was reported slightly higher than Thursday’s totals on both exchanges while the major averages ended unanimously higher. Advancers trumped decliners by over a 3-to-1 ratio and new 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on both major exchanges. There were 39 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, higher from the 23 issues that appeared on the prior session.

Monday & Tuesday’s Action:

Stocks ended higher on Monday after the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo confidence index slid to 14 in July which is the the lowest reading since April 2009 and down from last month’s reading of 16. Any reading below 50 means that respondents consider the current environment as poor. Over the next few weeks, it will be very interesting to see how companies fared last quarter and, equally important, to see how the market reacts to the numbers. Analysts believe that Q2 earnings for S&P 500 companies rose +34%. So far, the reaction has been positive.
Stocks rallied on Tuesday after several high profile companies released their Q2 results. Initially, stocks opened lower due to a general disappointment with their numbers but the bulls showed up in the second half of the session which was an encouraging sign. A slew of housing stocks rallied after building permits rose last month. However, housing starts, which measure new production, fell in June to their lowest level since October 2009 after the government tax incentive expired.

Wednesday- Friday’s Action:

Stocks got hit on Wednesday after President Obama signed into law the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act while Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke testified on Capitol Hill and a slew of earnings were released. On Thursday, the major averages vaulted above their two month downward trendlines and their respective 50 DMA lines which was a very healthy sign. The large rally was sparked after healthy economic data was released from Europe. The strong economic data helped allay concerns that an economic slowdown may derail the global recovery. Stocks ended higher on Friday after the latest round of large cap earnings were released and the results of the European Stress Test were mild.

Market Action- Confirmed Rally:

It was a very constructive week on Wall Street as all the major averages traded above their respective two month downward trendlines and their respective 50 DMA lines. It was also encouraging to see the Dow Jones Industrial Average & and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite close above their longer term downward sloping 200 DMA lines. There is no point in fighting the tape and the bulls deserve the bullish benefit of the doubt until this “breakout” is negated. Trade accordingly.

Market Action- Market In Confirmed Rally; Week 21
It was encouraging to see the bulls show up in November and defend the major averages’ respective 50 DMA lines. The market remains in a confirmed rally until those levels are breached. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite and small-cap Russell 2000 indexes continue to lead evidenced by their shallow correction and strong recovery. However, it is important to note that stocks are a bit extended here and a pullback of some sort (back to the 50 DMA lines) would do wonders to restore the health of this bull market. Put simply, stocks are strong. Trade accordingly. If you are looking for specific high ranked ideas, please contact us for more information.

  • Weak Economic Data Drags Stocks Lower

Monday marked Day 2 of a new rally attempt which means the earliest a possible follow-through day (FTD) could emerge will be Wednesday. However, if at anytime, Friday’s lows (Day 1) are breached then the day count will be reset. The technical action in the major averages has recently been weak while the latest round of economic data has provided a poor outlook for the market and the global recovery. Currently, resistance for the the major averages are their 50-day moving average (DMA) lines, then their longer-term 200 DMA lines while support remains July’s lows. It is also disconcerting to see weakness in the financial group. Meanwhile, the action in leading stocks and fact that some high-ranked leaders are breaking out of sound bases can be considered somewhat encouraging. Still there is importance in remaining cautious until the major averages are back in a confirmed uptrend. Put simply, we can expect this sideways/choppy action to continue until the market breaks out above resistance or below support. The first scenario will have bullish ramifications while the second will be clearly bearish. Trade accordingly.

  • Stocks Rally On Healthy Economic Data

Looking forward, the window is now open for disciplined investors to begin carefully buying high-ranked stocks again. The major indices’ 200-day moving average (DMA) lines may act as near term resistance. Remember to remain very selective because all of the major averages are still trading below their downward sloping 50 and 200 DMA lines. It was also somewhat disconcerting to see volume remain light (below average) behind the confirming gains. It is important to note that approximately 75% of FTDs lead to new sustained rallies, while 25% fail. In addition, every major rally in market history has begun with a FTD, but not every FTD leads to a new rally. Trade accordingly.

Market Action- Week 3 Of Correction
It is encouraging to see the bulls show up this week and defend the 50 DMA lines for the major averages. Wednesday marked Day 1 of a new rally attempt for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the benchmark S&P 500 which means the earliest a possible FTD could emerge for those indices is Monday. Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite and small-cap Russell 2000 indexes marked Day 10 of their respective rally attempts which means the window remains open for either of those two indices to score a proper FTD. Trade accordingly.
