Selling Continues On Wall St- 200 DMA Line Smacked

Tuesday, August 2, 2011
Stock Market Commentary:

Stocks were smacked on Tuesday after the Senate finally passed the debt bill. It was disconcerting to see all the major averages slice and close below their respective 50 & 200 DMA lines which suggests the bears are getting stronger. The technical action is ominous which bodes poorly for the near term outlook. Looking forward, the next level of support are the 2011 lows and the next level of resistance are the 2011 highs.

Senate Passes Debt Bill, Same Store Sales, & Personal Spending/Income Miss Estimates:

Stocks opened lower on Tuesday as investors across the globe were concerned that the global economic recovery may be in jeopardy. The International Council of Shopping Centers said its weekly measure of same store sales at major retail chains slid -0.3% on a weekly basis but rose +4% vs. the same period last year. Both measures fell short of the Street’s estimate for a gain of +0.3% and +4.2%, respectively. The Commerce Department said both spending and income were soft in June. Spending contracted -0.2% which missed estimates for a +0.1% gain. It was also the largest drop in spending since September 2009. The report also showed that personal income rose +0.1% which also missed estimates for a gain of +0.2%.

Market Outlook- Market In A Correction

The latest action in the major averages suggests the market is back in a correction as all the major averages are flirting with their respective 200 DMA lines. Our longstanding clients/readers know, we like to filter out the noise and focus on what matters most: market action. That said, the recent action suggests caution is paramount at this stage until all the major averages rally back towards their respective 2011 highs. If you are looking for specific help navigating this market, please contact us for more information.

Before Thursday’s open, the Labor Department said weekly jobless claims fell to the lowest level since July 2008 which was a healthy sign for the ailing jobs market. Last week, jobless claims fell by -34,000 to 388,000, lower than the median forecast of 415,000 according to Bloomberg News. After the open, the Chicago PMI topped estimates and rose to 68.6 which bodes well for the ongoing economic recovery. At 10 AM EST, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) said their pending home sales index topped estimates and rose +3.5% to 92.2 from a downwardly revised 89.1 in October. Pending home sales indicate pending contracts that have yet to be closed. The market barely budged on the news which reiterates our thesis that the major averages are in a tight holding pattern until 2011. However, the recent 4-month rally in the major averages suggests the economy will continue to improve in the first half of 2011 and, barring some unforeseen event, the risk of a double dip recession is temporarily off the table. Normally, the stock market serves as a leading indicator and a great discounting mechanism for the economy.

  • Stocks Soar On EU Bailout

The technical action in global equity markets is not promising. At this point, several European stock market’s have fallen over -20% from their 52-week highs which technically defines a bear market. The major US averages are all trading below their respective 50 DMA lines which is not healthy. It was also disconcerting to see volume dry up on Monday as the major averages “bounced” from egregiously oversold levels, which usually suggests massive short covering, not new buying efforts. A host of leading stocks closed near their lows after a very strong open which is a subtle, yet important, sign of distribution. However, if this market resolves itself and wants to go higher, we will need to see a proper follow-through day (FTD) emerge before a new rally can be confirmed. Monday marked Day 1 of a new rally attempt which means that as long as Monday’s lows are not breached the earliest a possible FTD could emerge will be Thursday (Day 4). In addition, if Monday’s lows are breached then the day count will be reset. Taking the appropriate action on a case-by-case basis with your stocks prompts investors to raise cash when any holdings start getting into trouble. Trade accordingly.
