Stocks Surge But Where's The Volume?

Thursday, June 10, 2010
Stock Market Commentary:

The major averages and a slew of commodities surged after a host of healthy economic data was released from Asia and the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England (BOE) held rates steady near historic lows. Volume, an important indicator of institutional sponsorship, was reported lighter than Wednesday’s levels on both major exchanges which prevented the S&P 500 from scoring a follow-through day (FTD) and suggested large institutions were not aggressively buying stocks. Advancers trumped decliners by well  over a 5-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were only 12 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, higher than the 5 issues that appeared on the prior session.  New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE but trailed new lows on the Nasdaq exchange.

Strong Economic Data From China, Japan, Australia & The US Lifts Stocks:

Overnight, stocks in Asia rose after a slew of healthy economic reports were released from China, Japan and Australia. The latest data showed accelerating economic growth which was a welcoming sign from that region. Chinese exports surged to a six year high which helped reaffirm the notion that the world’s fastest-growing major economy will continue to fuel the global recovery. Japan’s GDP rose at an annualized +5% rate in the first quarter and Australia’s nonfarm payrolls report rose for a third consecutive month. In the US, weekly jobless claims fell while the trade deficit widened to the highest level in a year as exports fell. All this, sent the US dollar lower and a host of dollar denominated assets higher (mainly stocks and commodities) as these markets work off their deeply oversold levels.

Market Action- In A Correction:

The benchmark S&P 500 Index marked Day 12 of its current rally attempt while narrowly avoiding undercutting its 5/25/10 low thus far but failed to score a proper FTD due to the light volume that accompanied Thursday’s strong move.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average marked Day 3 of its latest rally attempt while the Nasdaq composite marked day 1
It is well known that a market should not be considered “healthy” unless it trades above its rising 200-day moving average (DMA) line. The fact that all the major averages are below both their 50 & 200 DMA lines bodes poorly for the near term. That said, the bears will likely remain in control until the popular averages close above their important moving averages. Remember, we have seen these very strong light volume rallies in the past only to fail a few days later. Trade accordingly.

Market Action- Market In A Correction; 28-Week Rally Ends
All the major averages sliced below their respective 50 DMA lines on Thursday, March 10, 2011. Then, on Friday, all the major averages except for the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite managed to repair that damage and close above their respective 50 DMA lines which was somewhat encouraging and marked Day 1 of a new rally attempt. However, Friday’s lows were promptly breached on Monday as all the major averages dove below their 50 DMA lines on heavy volume and continued falling all week. This ominous action reset the day count and reiterates the importance of raising cash and playing strong defense until a new FTD emerges. • Another Lousy Week On Wall Street

    Market Outlook- Rally Under Pressure
From our point of view, the market rally is under pressure which suggests caution is paramount at this stage. Looking forward, the next level of support for the major averages are their respective 50 DMA lines and resistance is their 2011 highs. The rally remains in tact as long as support holds. • Resistance is Broken!

    Market Outlook- Confirmed Rally:
The major U.S. averages are back in a new confirmed rally and are flirting with resistance of their current 2.5 month base. The benchmark S&P 500 index scored a proper FTD on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, i.e. Day 12, when it rallied over 2% on heavier volume than the prior session. The next important area of resistance is September’s highs and then the 200 DMA line. In addition, it is important to note that the bulls scored a victory since many of the major averages closed above their downward sloping 50 DMA lines for the first time since late July! • Stocks Pullback After Monday's Strong Open

It is encouraging to see the bulls show up in November and defend the 50 DMA lines for the major averages. The market remains in a confirmed rally until those levels are breached. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite and small-cap Russell 2000 indexes continue to lead evidenced by their shallow correction and strong recovery. However, it is important to note that stocks are a bit extended here and a pullback of some sort (back to the 50 DMA lines) would do wonders to restore the health of this bull market. Put simply, stocks are strong. Trade accordingly. If you are looking for specific high ranked ideas, please contact us for more information.

  • Day 1 Of A New Rally Attempt

Stocks took a heavy beating on Thursday, sending all the major averages below their respective 200 DMA lines on heavy volume. Stocks ended higher on Friday after the S&P 500, Russell 2000 and Nasdaq Composite all shook out below their May 6, 2010 (flash crash) low. For the week, all the major averages suffered tremendous losses and fell over -10% from their late April highs, which is the first time a pullback of that magnitude has occurred since the March 2009 low. The fact that the market rallied on Friday technically marked Day 1 of a new rally attempt which means the earliest a proper follow-through day (FTD) could occur would be Wednesday, providing Friday’s lows are not breached. However, if at anytime, Friday’s lows are breached, then the day count will be reset. What does all of this mean for investors? Simple, the market remains in a correction which reiterates the importance of adopting a strong defense stance until a new rally is confirmed. Trade accordingly.
