Stocks Get Smacked As Dollar Soars!

Wednesday, August 11, 2010
Stock Market Commentary:

The major averages got smacked on Wednesday after a weaker than expected manufacturing report was released from China and the US trade gap widened. Volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchanges versus the prior session, which marked a second consecutive distribution day for the major averages. Decliners trumped advancers by over a 5-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by over an 8-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE but trailed new lows on the Nasdaq exchange. There were only high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down sharply from the 24 issues that appeared on the prior session.

China’s Economy Slows; Dollar Soars!

Stocks fell in Asia and Europea after China released a weaker than expected manufacturing report. This led many to question whether or not China’s strong economy will be able to offset weakness in other areas of the global recovery. On Tuesday, China said imports fell short of the Street’s lofty expectations which also put pressure on the global recovery theme. In the US, the trade deficit unexpectedly grew in June to the highest level since October 2008. The report showed that consumer goods imports rose to a record level and exports fell. Fears of a global economic slowdown sent the US dollar soaring which also put pressure on a slew of dollar denominated assets (mainly stocks and commodities).

Market Action- Uptrend Under Pressure

The technical action in the major averages has deteriorated significantly now that all the major averages failed to close above their recent chart highs (resistance) and sliced below their respective 200 DMA lines. It is also worrisome to see the number of distribution days pile up in recent weeks which puts pressure on the current five-week rally.  In order for a new leg higher to begin, all the major averages must close and remain above their respective resistance levels. Trade accordingly.

Market Action- Confirmed Rally; Week 24
It was encouraging to see the bulls show up and defend the major averages’ respective 50 DMA lines in November as this market proves resilient and simply refuses to go down. From our point of view, the market remains in a confirmed rally until those levels are breached. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite and small-cap Russell 2000 indexes continue to lead evidenced by their shallow correction and strong recovery. However, it is important to note that stocks are a bit extended here and a pullback of some sort (back to the 50 DMA lines) would do wonders to restore the health of this bull market. • Stocks Fall On Renewed EU Debt Woes

Thursday marked Day 2 of a new rally attempt which means that the earliest a possible follow-through day (FTD) could emerge will be Monday. However, if at anytime, Wednesday’s lows (Day 1) are breached then the day count will be reset. The technical action in the major averages and the latest round of economic data bodes poorly for the market and the global recovery. Currently, resistance for the the major averages are their 50 DMA lines, then their longer term 200 DMA lines while support remains July’s lows. It is also disconcerting to see weakness in the financial group while action in leading stocks has been questionable as evidenced by the dearth of high-ranked leaders breaking out of sound bases. This emphasizes the importance of remaining cautious until the rally is back in a confirmed uptrend. Put simply, we can expect this sideways/choppy action to continue until the market breaks out above resistance or below support. The first scenario will have bullish ramifications while the second will be clearly bearish. Trade accordingly.

  • Stocks Encounter Resistance Near 50 DMA Line

Tuesday marked Day 2 of the current rally attempt which means that as long as Monday’s lows are not breached the earliest a proper FTD could emerge will be this Thursday. However, if Monday’s lows are breached, then the day count will be reset. Taking the appropriate action on a case-by-case basis with your stocks prompts investors to raise cash when any holdings get into trouble. Trade accordingly.
