Stocks Mixed As Dollar Rallies

Monday, November 22, 2010
Stock Market Commentary:

Stocks and commodities fell as the USD rallied after Ireland’s political environment fell into turmoil. The rally which began on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day ended on Tuesday. November 16, 2010 as stocks and commodities plunged in heavy trade. Wednesday marked day 1 of a new rally attempt, which means that as long as Wednesday’s lows are not breached, the earliest a possible FTD could emerge will be Monday, November 22, 2010.

EU Debt Contagion Sends Stocks Lower:

Over the weekend, Ireland’s government said it would accept an emergency aid package from the EU/IMF. However, on Monday, the euro plunged in heavy trade after failing at resistance (formerly support near 138) after fear spread that other EU nations will need to be bailed out and Ireland’s credit rating may be downgraded. Moody’s Investors Service said a “ multi-notch” downgrade in Ireland’s Aa2 credit rating was “most likely” because the country’s emergency bailout package would increase (not decrease) its debt burden. Elections are slated for January and the Green Party said it would pull out of Prime Minister Brian Cowen’s coalition due to the onerous debt woes. The last thing the country needs right now is political instability. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

Market Action- 12 Week Rally Ends – Week 2 In A Correction:

The 12-week rally ended on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 after the major averages plunged in heavy volume back down towards their respective 50 DMA lines. In recent weeks, we have repeatedly written about how the major averages were experiencing wide-and-loose action after a big move and made it very clear that that was not a healthy sign. At this point, we are looking for a new rally to be confirmed with a new follow-through day before taking any new positions. However, we would be remiss not to note that the major averages deserve the bullish benefit of the doubt as long as they remain above their respective 50 DMA lines.  Caution and patience are key at this point. Trade accordingly.

    Market Outlook- In A Correction:
The major U.S. averages are still in a “correction” as they continue to bounce towards resistance of their 2-month base. The latest follow-through day (FTD) which began on August 23, 2011 has officially ended which means we will continue “counting” days before a new rally can be confirmed. In addition, it is important to note that the bulls scored a victory since many of the major averages closed above their downward sloping 50 DMA lines for the first time since late July! The next stop is September’s highs and then their 200 DMA lines. Our longstanding clients/readers know, we like to filter out the noise and focus on what matters most: market action. Market Outlook- Uptrend Under Pressure:
The last week of June’s strong action suggests the market is back in a confirmed rally. As our longstanding clients/readers know, we like to filter out the noise and focus on what matters most: market action. That said, the current rally is under severe pressure as investors patiently await earnings season and continue to digest the latest economic data. Until all the major averages violate their respective 50 DMA lines on a closing basis, the market deserves the bullish benefit of the doubt. • Stocks Flirt With Resistance

The benchmark S&P 500 Index marked Day 14 of its current rally attempt and is currently encountering resistance just below its 200 DMA line. The Dow Jones Industrial Average marked Day 5 of its latest rally attempt while the Nasdaq Composite marked Day 3. At this point, the window is now open for the major averages to produce a sound follow-through day (FTD) until the recent lows are breached. Furthermore, it is well known that a market should not be considered “healthy” unless it trades above its rising 200-day moving average (DMA) line. The fact that all the major averages are below both their 50 & 200 DMA lines bodes poorly for the near term. That said, the bears will likely remain in control until the popular averages close above their important moving averages. Trade accordingly.

  • Global Markets Mixed As Geithner Heads To Europe

Tuesday, December 6, 2011 Stock Market Commentary: Risk assets were mixed on Monday as optimism spread regarding the European debt crisis. From our point of view, the market confirmed its latest rally attempt on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 when all the major averages soared over +4% on monstrous volume in response to the global central banks coordinated efforts to…

  • Stocks Score A FTD, New Rally Confirmed!

The Nasdaq composite confirmed its latest rally attempt and produced a sound FTD which means the window is now open to begin buying high-ranked stocks again. Technically, it was encouraging to see the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the benchmark S&P 500 index close above their respective 200 DMA lines. However, the fact that volume receded compared to the prior session prevented the DJIA and S&P 500 from scoring a proper FTD.
At this point, the S&P 500 is down -8.5% from its 19-month high of 1,219 and managed to close above resistance (200 DMA line) of its latest trading range. Looking forward, the 200 DMA line should now act as support as this market continues advancing. Remember to remain very selective because all the major averages are still trading below their downward sloping 50 DMA lines. It was also disconcerting to see volume remain suspiciously light behind Tuesday’s move. It is important to note that approximately +75% of FTD’s lead to new sustained rallies, while +25% fail. In addition, every major rally in market history has begun with a FTD, but not every FTD leads to a new rally. Trade accordingly.

  • Stocks Plunge As Contagion Fears Spread

The market is currently in a correction which, according to historical precedent, suggests 3 out of 4 stocks will follow the market lower until a new follow-through day emerges. That said, taking the appropriate action on a case-by-case basis with your stocks prompts investors to raise cash when any holdings start getting in trouble. It is also important to note that the major averages have experienced multiple “corrections” since the March 2009 lows and each one has been mild at best (less than a -10% decline from the recent high). Therefore, it will be very interesting to see how low this correction goes before the bulls show up and defend support (if that happens).
Additionally, it is important to note that the market can go much lower (or higher) than anyone thinks; so it is of the utmost importance to filter out the “noise” and carefully analyze price and volume for the best read on the health of the market.
