Stocks Bounce As New Week Begins

Monday, May 09, 2011
Stock Market Commentary:

Stocks and a host of commodities rallied after last week’s week-long “Flash Crash.” From our vantage point, the market rally remains under pressure due to the lackluster action in the major averages and so many leading stocks.

Stocks Rally As Jobs Related Bounce Continues

Stocks and a host of commodities rallied on the first day of the week, rebounding from last week’s very sharp sell off. It was encouraging to see a slew of leading stocks hold up rather well during lat week’s sell off ranging from: AAPL, NFLX, BIDU, PCLN, GMCR, MCP, & AMZN.

Market Outlook- Rally Under Pressure

From our point of view, the market rally is under pressure which suggests caution is paramount at this stage.  Looking forward, the next level of support for the major averages are their respective 50 DMA lines. The rally remains in tact as long as support holds. If you are looking for specific help navigating this market, please contact us for more information.

Looking at the market, the action remains constructive. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, small cap Russell 2000 Index, S&P 500 Index, Nasdaq Composite and NYSE Composite indices are all trading near fresh 2009 highs which bodes well for this rally. The inverse relationship with the US dollar has eased in recent weeks as both stocks and the greenback have rallied in tandem. Ideally, one would like to see leadership and volume expand over the next few weeks as the major averages continue advancing.

  • Stocks End Mixed As Volume Recedes

The stock market ended mixed on Monday after trading in a very tight range for most of the session. Volume, an important indicator of institutional sponsorship, was lower than Friday’s levels on both major exchanges which suggested large institutions were not aggressively selling stocks. Advancers led decliners by about a 10-to-9 ratio on the NYSE and were roughly even on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 29 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, less than the total of 45 issues that appeared on the prior session. Leadership among high-ranked growth stocks had dried up in recent weeks, so the expansion in new highs this week has been a welcome improvement. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

  • Stocks End Week Higher

Looking at the market, since the March 1, follow-through-day (FTD) the market and a batch of leading stocks steadily rallied. The fact that we have not seen any serious distribution days since the FTD bodes well for this nascent rally. It is also a welcome sign to see the market continue to improve as investors digest the latest round of stronger than expected economic and earnings data.Remember that now that a new rally has been confirmed, the window is open to start buying high quality breakouts. Trade accordingly.
