Stocks Rally As Inflation Fears Ease

Tuesday, May 10, 2011
Stock Market Commentary:

Stocks and a host of commodities rallied for a second straight day after last week’s week-long “Flash Crash.” From our vantage point, the market rally remains under pressure due to the lackluster action in the major averages and several leading stocks.

Import Prices Rise; Rate Of Growth Slows

The Labor Department said overall import prices rose +2.2% in April which was the seventh consecutive monthly gain.  April’s rate eased from March’s +2.6% but topped the Street’s estimate for a +1.8% rise. The report helped allay concerns that inflation was accelerating. In other news, Microsoft (MSFT) agreed to buy Skype for $8.5 billion.

Market Outlook- Rally Under Pressure

From our point of view, the market rally is under pressure which suggests caution is paramount at this stage.  Looking forward, the next level of support for the major averages are their respective 50 DMA lines and resistance is their 2011 highs. The rally remains in tact as long as support holds. Market Outlook- Rally Under Pressure:
The major averages confirmed their latest rally attempt on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 which was the 11th day of their latest rally attempt. It is important to note that all major rallies in history began with a FTD however not every FTD leads to a new rally (i.e. several FTDs fail). In addition, it is important to note that the major averages still are under pressure as they are all trading below their longer and shorter term moving averages (50 and 200 DMA lines) and are all still negative year-to-date. Our longstanding clients/readers know, we like to filter out the noise and focus on what matters most: market action. This rally will fail if/when several distribution days emerge or August’s lows are breached. Until then, the bulls deserve the benefit of the doubt. • Week-In-Review: The Market Is Getting Weaker, Not Stronger

The Tape Is Getting Weaker The tape remains very split but is getting weaker. This was the 8th consecutive week that the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial average closed below their respective 50 DMA lines. More worrisome for the bulls, the Russell 2000 broke below the neckline of a big double top pattern (see…

  • Stocks End Mixed On Busy News Day

Overall, the action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) remains healthy. Looking forward, the window is now open for disciplined investors to begin carefully buying high-ranked stocks again. It was encouraging to see a flurry of high-ranked leaders trigger fresh technical buy signals and break out of sound bases in recent weeks. All the major averages rallied above their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines this week, which is another encouraging sign. The next important resistance level the major averages are facing is their respective summer highs.

  • Stocks Fall On Sour Economic Data

The technical action in the major averages continues to weaken. Currently, resistance for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the benchmark S&P 500 index is their respective 200 DMA lines, while the Nasdaq composite faces resistance at its 50 DMA line. It is also disconcerting to see the action in several leading stocks remain questionable at best evidenced by the dearth of high ranked leaders breaking out of sound bases. Thursday’s action wiped out the gains enjoyed earlier in the week for the major averages which emphasizes the importance of remaining cautious until the rally is back in a confirmed uptrend. Put simply, we can expect this sideways/choppy action to continue until the market breaks out above resistance or below support (recent chart lows). The first scenario will have bullish ramifications while the second will be clearly bearish. Trade accordingly.
