All Eyes On Earnings

Stock Market Commentary:

Stocks opened higher on Monday as the euro rallied and crude oil topped $108/barrel. It was encouraging to see a slew of leading stocks and the benchmark S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nasdaq composite, and small cap Russell 2000 index all close and stay above their respective 50 DMA lines in late March. The 28-week rally, which began on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD), ended on Thursday March 10, 2011 when all the major U.S. averages plunged below their respective 50 DMA lines in heavy trade. However, the correction was short lived when a new rally was confirmed on Thursday March 24, 2011′s healthy action. Since then, the action remains healthy which suggests the bulls are back in control of this market.

Stocks Rally As Q2 Begins: All Eyes On Earnings

Stocks opened higher on Monday as traders await the official start to Q1 earnings season. We would be remiss not to note that earnings since the March 2009 low have been very strong. The latest data shows that S&P 500 are on track to surpass the 2007 peak of $90 a share in the third quarter after surging from $7 in March 2009. If that were to occur, than this would be the fastest recovery since at least 1900, according to data from Bloomberg, Standard & Poor’s, and Yale University’s Robert Shiller. The data shows that the difference between projected 12-month earnings and average earnings over the last 10 years is set to widen the most since 1951! This bodes well for the current bull market and Q1 earnings season. Keep in mind, that in addition to focusing on the actual results, we like to focus on how the market and each individual stock reacts to its earnings for a pure read on what the market thinks of the data.

Market Action-Confirmed Uptrend

The market is back in a confirmed uptrend after a modest (and healthy) -6% correction from its post-recovery highs. We find it very bullish to see the mid cap S&P 400 index hit a fresh all time high and the small cap Russell 2000 index flirt with its all time high. in addition, the Dow Jones Industrial Average vaulted to a fresh post-recovery high and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq composite are just shy of fresh 2011 highs! Finally, we are very happy to see a slew of high ranked stocks trigger fresh technical buy signals in recent weeks which suggests higher, not lower prices lie ahead. If you are looking for specific help navigating this market, please contact us for more information.

Market Action- Confirmed Rally; Week 25 Begins
It was encouraging to see the bulls show up and defend the major averages’ respective 50 DMA lines in November as this market proves resilient and simply refuses to go down. From our point of view, the market remains in a confirmed rally until those levels are breached. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite and small-cap Russell 2000 indexes continue to lead evidenced by their shallow correction and strong recovery. However, it is important to note that stocks are a bit extended here and a pullback of some sort (back to the 50 DMA lines) would do wonders to restore the health of this bull market. However, it is important to note that stocks are a bit extended here and a pullback of some sort (back to the 50 DMA lines) would do wonders to restore the health of this bull market. • Stocks End Week Higher

Looking at the market, since the March 1, follow-through-day (FTD) the market and a batch of leading stocks steadily rallied. The fact that we have not seen any serious distribution days since the FTD bodes well for this nascent rally. It is also a welcome sign to see the market continue to improve as investors digest the latest round of stronger than expected economic and earnings data.Remember that now that a new rally has been confirmed, the window is open to start buying high quality breakouts. Trade accordingly.

  • Weak Economic Data Drags Stocks Lower

Monday marked Day 2 of a new rally attempt which means the earliest a possible follow-through day (FTD) could emerge will be Wednesday. However, if at anytime, Friday’s lows (Day 1) are breached then the day count will be reset. The technical action in the major averages has recently been weak while the latest round of economic data has provided a poor outlook for the market and the global recovery. Currently, resistance for the the major averages are their 50-day moving average (DMA) lines, then their longer-term 200 DMA lines while support remains July’s lows. It is also disconcerting to see weakness in the financial group. Meanwhile, the action in leading stocks and fact that some high-ranked leaders are breaking out of sound bases can be considered somewhat encouraging. Still there is importance in remaining cautious until the major averages are back in a confirmed uptrend. Put simply, we can expect this sideways/choppy action to continue until the market breaks out above resistance or below support. The first scenario will have bullish ramifications while the second will be clearly bearish. Trade accordingly.

  • Strong Week on Wall Street; New Rally Confirmed!

    Market Action-Confirmed Uptrend
From our point of view, the market is back in a confirmed uptrend after a modest (and healthy)-6% correction from its post-recovery highs. The fact that the Dow Jones Industrial Average, small-cap Russell 2000 index, and Copper all closed above their respective 50 DMA lines on Wednesday March, 23 was a very healthy sign and suggests higher prices will follow. The very next day, the benchmark S&P 500 regained that important level and broke above its downward trendline (shown above). Couple that with the fact that other markets like Oil, Silver, and Gold are all at fresh post recovery highs suggests it is only a matter of time until equities follow. The final bullish sign for us was that a slew of high ranked stocks triggered fresh technical buy signals this week which suggests higher, not lower prices lie ahead!
