Stocks Edge Higher After Retesting 200 DMA Line

Thursday, June 17, 2010
Stock Market Commentary:

The major averages ended slightly higher as investors digested a slew of economic data and BP’s (BP) CEO spent the day testifying on Capital Hill. Volume totals were reported lower on both major exchanges, which signaled that large institutions were not aggressively selling stocks. Advancers were about even with decliners on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange as the major averages continued consolidating Tuesday’s large move. There were 22 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, lower than the 35 issues that appeared on the prior session.  New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.

Investors Digest A Slew of Economic Data: Jobless Claims, CPI, & Leading Indicators:

Before Thursday’s opening bell, the Labor Department said US jobless claims rose to 472,000 last week and the consumer price index slid which helped allay inflation woes. After the bell, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s general economic index fell to a 10-month low of 8, less than half the median estimate of Wall Street economists. The Conference Board’s index of leading indicators in April edged down -0.1%, following a +1.3% increase in the prior month.

Stock Market Action- Confirmed Rally:

The major averages confirmed their latest rally attempt on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 when they produced a sound follow-through day. Looking forward, the window is now open for disciplined investors to begin carefully buying high-ranked stocks again. Technically, it was encouraging to also see the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the benchmark S&P 500 Index rally above their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines. Looking forward, the 200 DMA line should now act as support as this market continues advancing, while any reversal would be a worrisome sign.
Remember to remain very selective because all of the major averages are still trading below their downward sloping 50 DMA lines.  It was somewhat disconcerting to see volume remain light (below average) behind the confirming gains. It is important to note that approximately 75% of FTDs lead to new sustained rallies, while 25% fail. In addition, every major rally in market history has begun with a FTD, but not every FTD leads to a new rally. Trade accordingly.

    Market Outlook- Uptrend Under Pressure:
The last week of June’s strong action suggests the market is back in a confirmed rally. As our longstanding clients/readers know, we like to filter out the noise and focus on what matters most: market action. That said, the current rally is under severe pressure as investors patiently await earnings season and continue to digest the latest economic data. Until all the major averages violate their respective 50 DMA lines on a closing basis, the market deserves the bullish benefit of the doubt. • Quiet Day On Wall Street

Heretofore, the action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) has been strong but the market action has been wide-and-loose which is not a healthy sign. The S&P 500 sliced below its two month upward trendline (shown above) which is not ideal. The next level of support for the major averages is their September highs, then their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines while the next level of resistance is their respective April highs. We have enjoyed large gains since the September 1st FTD and for the first time, the tape is getting sloppy. Trade accordingly.

  • Healthy Economic Data Helps Stocks

Looking at the market, the latest rally attempt was confirmed when a “cautious follow-through day” was produced by the Nasdaq Composite on Monday, March 1. Weighing into the decision to label the day a follow-through-day (FTD) was the strong action in leading stocks along with a great expansion noted in the new highs list. That action suggests that there is a healthy crop of strong stocks capable of fueling a substantial rally higher for the major averages. We will be looking out for any near-term distribution days (high volume declines) which would hurt the chances for this nascent rally. Until then, the bulls deserve the bullish benefit of the doubt as the major averages continue edging higher.
It is a welcome sign to see the market continue to improve as investors digest the latest round of stronger than expected economic and earnings data. Remember that now that a new rally has been confirmed, the window is open to start buying high quality breakouts. Trade accordingly.

  • Another Weekly Gain On Wall Street

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NYSE Composite Index have traded above resistance at their long term 200-day moving average (DMA) lines and recent chart highs. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite, benchmark S&P 500, and small-cap Russell 2000 index still remain slightly below their recent chart highs. However, the fact that all of the major averages are trading above their respective 2-month downward trendlines bodes well for this five week rally. In order for a new leg higher to begin, all the major averages must close and remain above their respective resistance levels. Remember that the window remains open for for high-ranked stocks to be accumulated when they trigger fresh technical buy signals. Trade accordingly.

  • Day 11: Stocks Consolidate Recent Move

Looking at the market, Friday marked day 11 of a new rally attempt which means that as long as the February 5th lows are not breached the window remains open for a new follow-through day (FTD) to emerge. A new follow-through day will confirm the current rally attempt and will be produced when one of the major averages rallies at least +1.7% on higher volume than the prior session as a new batch of leaders break out of fresh bases. However, if the February 5, 2010 lows are breached then the day count will be reset and a steeper correction may unfold. So far, the market’s reaction has been tepid at best to the latest round of economic and earnings data which remains a concern. Remember that the market remains in a correction until a new new follow-through day emerges. Until then, patience is king.

  • Consumer Spending, Incomes, & Inflation Rise

    Market Action-Confirmed Uptrend
From our point of view, the market is back in a confirmed uptrend after a modest (and healthy)-6% correction from its post-recovery highs. The fact that the Dow Jones Industrial Average, small-cap Russell 2000 index, and Copper all closed above their respective 50 DMA lines on Wednesday March, 23 was a very healthy sign and suggests higher prices will follow. The very next day, the benchmark S&P 500 regained that important level and broke above its downward trendline (shown above). Couple that with the fact that other markets like Oil, Silver, and Gold are all at fresh post recovery highs suggests it is only a matter of time until equities follow. The final bullish sign for us was that a slew of high ranked stocks triggered fresh technical buy signals this week which suggests higher, not lower prices lie ahead!
